Three Symbols

Three important symbols in The Life of Pi:

1. The dangerous island Pi reaches while lost at sea is a very important setting in book two. This island brings much needed excitement to this extremely boring novel. This island is an "island of adventure" for Pi, as he finds numerous exotic creatures and begins to have daily interactions with them. He also finds human teeth on the island which brings a sense of hope in young Pi's mind. But he later comes to realize that the island is inhabited by a group of man-eating cannibals. Of all the parts of the book, this would have to be the favorite.

2. Richard Parker is a very important part of the novel. Without him in the book, Pi would not be able to survive because the animal forces him to be the dominant, more aggressive character in the book. In order to tame a man-eating animal you must be able to show your dominance and never be seen as weak. He states himself "without Richard Parker, I wouldn't be alive today to tell you my story."

3. The ocean also plays a very intricate role in The Life of Pi because water usually represents some sort of cleansing or new start. Pi was on that raft for more than 200 days; in which he had tons of time to think. It made him expand as a person, for example he was forced to eat fish and stray away from his vegetarian diet. Also, he learned how to fend for himself and not rely on his pampering parents for everything. He became a much stronger, more mature person once his ocean journey was completed.

are you serious? did you even read the book?
"He also finds human teeth on the island which brings a sense of hope in young Pi's mind. But he later comes to realize that the island is inhabited by a group of man-eating cannibals."
????
pi NEVER felt hope through the discovery of the teeth, he was immediately horror-stricken. and there were no man-eating cannibals..... the island was CARNIVOROUS, not CANNIBALISTIC. and how were his parents pampering?? they forced their children to watch a live goat being devoured by a voracious tiger.

I agree completely with "R."
Do you know what you're talking about? First, the island's purpose isn't just to bring "much needed excitement to this extremely boring novel." And it's more than an "island adventure." This island represents false hope and how you can't let yourself fall into a false sense of security. Just because Pi found land didn't mean his journey was over, had he given into it, he would have been the island's next meal. (Also, I have to disagree with the novel being extremely boring, yes, parts of it were hard to get through but over all there are many fascinating things about it). The island also represents religion, when Pi challenges the Chinese men to believe his story even though they couldn't prove the island existed, it was a metaphor for challenging someone to have faith in God even if they can't prove that a higher power exists.
Second, Richard Parker isn't just a tiger, he represents the fierce animalistic side of Pi that comes out that allows him to survive. You should also mention the other symbols- Orange Juice, the zebra and the hyena and discuss the "better story" because these are all closely related to Richard Parker.
And his journey wasn't about becoming more mature and learning to live without his "pampering parents" (completely untrue, I may add), but about going through a religious journey and becoming closer to God and more faithful. You can't say Pi was more mature at the end than the beginning.
One more thing- and this may just be me being picky but you may as well say that his journey was 227 days, not just 200+. This number is actually a very important symbol because it connects to his name, 22/7=3.24.......
I really don't think that you should be posting crap like this when you clearly didn't read it. Next time, don't be so quick to judge something, look into it more. And if you don't like a book, just say it and support it, you're entitled to your opinions, but don't try to pass off as having a deep and intense understanding of it.

Seriously, how did you miss the fact that the island itself was carnivorous?

And Pi IS Richard Parker. He leaves him as soon as he touches shore.

Jesse Pi isn't Richard Parker nor is pi the boy. There are two stories, Where Pi is the boy, which is most of the story, and at the end he made up another story. The author whats you to decide which one is right. Therefore you are wrong because there is no right or wrong answer.

Spiritual Will
Had Its Will

Richard Parker,
He’s the lineman.
Hey I need you.
You’re somethin’
Rock the boat,
A little patrol of safety
From the most dangerous thing of all,
What keep me on my toes
Till the morning come.
Put ‘im beside your bed.
You grow strength that way.

Never a release from the tiger.
I’m not lyin’.
Among other things
You show it rules to obey
It will learn them.
Boy mustn’t get too carried away.
The moment of mastery has arrived.
A friendship now it knows you.
Take him to salt.
He’s your challenger no more.
It’s your moment past him.
Something bigger,
Bigger than life even,
Is your next movie.
Can’t a cheetah do it,
Make on earth reveal God.

Richard Parker,
Thank you Richard Parker.
I must’ve been asleep.
This symbolism gown,
This gonna cost yah.
You make them wear veils
What you’d reach for wrong.
I skipped a generation,
Let it come in for school.
After a good many trials and tribulations
I reached my way North.

Now what did Life of Pi
Have to teach us?
You know,
I wanna tell you somethin’.
What?
You thought you just winked right out of there.
For oneness to occur
Even
How many miles of road
With their temple
